La Vie avec toi | In home session
July 18, 2018 by Afrik Armando in Engagement, Stories 1 Comment

In this age of social media where we present curated versions of our lives, it’s getting more difficult to be authentic, but I love in home sessions because you really see what’s behind closed doors. And to be honest, I’m honored when people get vulnerable, I know we don’t always feel like smiling, we fight, we cry and we sometimes feel sad. But that’s ok because life is not about being perfect, it’s about the process, it’s about the journey and the stories we’ll be able to tell from our experiences. I’m truly grateful for these two, for opening their door and sharing a piece of their life with me. The laughs, the love, the boredom, and the berries, thanks friends.

3 reasons you’re photogenic
May 3, 2018 by Afrik Armando in Stories 0 Comments

I’ve been on this journey of telling stories with my camera for a little bit of time now. One of the most common phrases I hear is “Oh Afrik I’m not photogenic”. But here are three things I think you should understand before you make your conclusion; 1) You are unique When I was much younger, I didn’t like my curly hair or brown skin. I thought my nose was too wide and I wasn’t good enough. My self-esteem was at the bottom of the barrel and these perceptions of myself rubbed off on everything I did. But as I matured I realized that beauty goes beyond the surface. Beauty is whatever u want it to be. And yes I know this idea is very cliche but truly there is no one like you, there has never been someone like you and there’ll never be another you. This isn’t a call to narcism, but I think it’s important that no matter who you are, you feel good in your own skin and about urself. So with my camera, I seek to tell the story of everyone I meet, and not only take pictures but show them how incredible they are […]

Color of Love | Engagement Photoshoot | Vita+Benjamin
March 26, 2018 by Afrik Armando in Engagement, Stories 0 Comments

I know there are lots of self-made people here in the world but I’m not one of them and that’s because of friends like Vita. A few years ago while we were out on one of my first portrait session, I had the genius idea to get Vita into a puddle of water for a reflection shot. Lost with my head in the creative cloud, I didn’t take into consideration how chilly it was. Nonetheless, Vita trusting me did it anyway. Now that I have the honor of being her wedding photographer, she still wholeheartedly puts her trust in my creativity. This is why I’m not self-made cause friends like Vita have trusted me regardless of how ridiculously crazy some of my ideas are. Thanks Vita for lifting me up with your kind and encouraging words through the years and Benjamin, keep her laughing out loud. Vita and BenjaminKimmel Center

5 Tips on creating stunning smoke bomb wedding images
March 13, 2018 by Afrik Armando in Stories, Weddings 0 Comments

With the wedding season on the horizon, I decided to compile a short list of some of the things I learned last year from shooting with smoke bombs. Last summer for the first time a couple asked me if I was on board with using smoke bombs for their day-after shoot, initially, I felt a bit intimidated but the beautiful thing about the tech age is that you can literally find everything online. So here are some of the things I learned at my smoke bomb wedding photoshoots; HAVE A CONCEPT OR THEME Sometimes the beautiful wedding images I get happen by accident but I think planning sets up the stage for these things to happen. A core part of planning is having a concept or idea for your shoot, what do you want the images to portray? What mood are you going for? And what vision do you have?these things inform the colors, lighting, and location of your shoot. For the images below, my goal was to capture the magical hearts of Kat and Serge (my wedding couple), so I knew the light had to be a key component. We used soft pink for their tender love and went […]

Veiled Beauty | David + Nadiya | New York City Anniversary Session
September 21, 2017 by Afrik Armando in Stories 0 Comments

I have to admit, when I got invited to New York City by David and Nadiya Novik for an anniversary session, I felt beyond intimidated. My few visits to New York had left me with an overwhelming sour taste for the city. Invisible was I to the many who bumped into me but a lucrative client to all the street musicians who’d pull my hand in an attempt to sell me their mixtape. So New York to me was a no no, too many unconcerned pedestrians, cab drivers who wouldn’t care if they knocked you dead and the unbearable traffic. But all this changed when I spent the day with David and Nadiya. Their love was in such perfect harmony with the city. They knew just the right places to go to and each time we would stop to take a picture, the crowds would watch in wonder. Then they told me about their countless adventures in the city, the date nights, the park walks and ice cream strolls. I began seeing a different side of the city, a tender side which had been covered by the hustle and bustle of time square. I had made a judgment too quickly. It […]
